EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-coloured copperplate print depicts a Javan Rusa or Sunda Sambar Deer, scientifically known as Rusa timorensis. The deer is shown in its natural habitat, standing gracefully in a swampy environment. Once abundant in the swamps and forests of Java and Bali in Indonesia, as well as in the Sundaland region of Southeast Asia, the Javan Rusa is now considered a vulnerable species. The deer's population has declined significantly due to habitat loss, hunting, and human disturbance. The print was drawn and engraved by W. Panormo from William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's History of the Earth and Animated Nature, published in London by Thomas Kelly in 1829. Buffon was a renowned French naturalist, and his work was one of the most influential scientific texts of the 18th century. The print's intricate details and vibrant colors showcase the beauty and elegance of this majestic deer. The Javan Rusa is also known as the swamp deer or the barasingha in India, where it is found in small numbers in protected areas. The Rucervus duvaucelii, another species of swamp deer, is also shown in the same print. Both species are closely related and share similar physical characteristics, such as their large, curved antlers and their ability to swim in water. The Zoological Society's gardens, where the deer may have once been exhibited, played an essential role in the study and conservation of rare and endangered species. Today, many zoos and wildlife parks continue this tradition, breeding and caring for endangered animals to help preserve their populations and protect them from extinction.
