EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the momentous occasion of the launch of HMS Waterloo at Chatham Dockyard on 10th June 1833. HMS Waterloo, a proud addition to the Royal Navy, was a formidable first-rate ship of the line, boasting an impressive 120 guns. The launching of a new ship was an elaborate and highly anticipated event, marking the culmination of months, if not years, of meticulous planning and hard work by the naval dockyard staff. The photograph shows a large crowd gathered on the shore, eagerly anticipating the launch. The ship, partially submerged in the water, is held in place by a multitude of ropes and chains, while the crew, dressed in their distinctive naval uniforms, stand ready to set the ship free. In the foreground, a group of dignitaries, including naval officers and local dignitaries, observe the proceedings with great interest. The launching process was a complex and intricate one, requiring the coordinated efforts of the crew and the dockyard workers. As the ship was slowly released from its moorings, the ropes and chains were carefully cut, and the sails were hoisted to catch the wind and propel the vessel out of the dock. The launch of HMS Waterloo was a significant event in the history of the Royal Navy, and this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a unique insight into the process of building and launching a ship of this size and importance in the early 19th century.
