EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre in 1825, showcases three remarkable and endangered species of sharks: the Leafscale Gulper Shark, Sawfish, and Angel Shark. The Leafscale Gulper Shark (Centrophorus squamosus), depicted on the left, is a deep-sea shark with a unique, textured skin. It is named for the small, leaf-like scales covering its body, which help it blend in with the sea floor. This vulnerable species is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is threatened by deep-sea fishing and bycatch. In the center, the Sawfish (Pristiophorus cirratus) is easily recognizable by its long, tooth-studded rostrum, or snout. This endangered species is found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, and is threatened by accidental capture in fishing gear and habitat loss. On the right, the Angel Shark (Squatina squatina) lies flat on the ocean floor, camouflaged among the sand and rocks. This critically endangered species is found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas, and is threatened by overfishing and habitat destruction. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting these magnificent and vulnerable creatures. It is a testament to the skill and artistry of the naturalists and engravers of the past, and a call to action for us to preserve these sharks and their habitats for future generations.
