The Lille Gate in the Ypres ramparts seen across the moat

Ypres is a walled city and it has several routes into it. The two most well-known of its gates through the ramparts are via the Menin Gate (on the old road to Menin) and the Lille Gate (on the old road to Lille). Contrary to popular opinion, most British troops moving up to the Salient did so via this gate because the Menin gate was particularly exposed to enemy shell fire. The pillars on either side of the archway date from 1395 and the ramparts were revamped by Vauban

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Lille Gate in Ypres: A Historical Entryway into a Walled City The Lille Gate, located in the Ypres ramparts, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history of this walled city in Belgium. Contrary to popular belief, most British troops approaching the Ypres Salient during World War I did not enter the city via the Menin Gate, as is commonly assumed. Instead, they predominantly used the Lille Gate, which was less exposed to enemy shell fire. The Lille Gate, with its impressive archway, stands tall against the backdrop of the moat that surrounds the city. The two pillars on either side of the gate date back to 1395, showcasing the ancient history of Ypres. The ramparts, which encircle the city, were significantly revamped in the late 17th century by the renowned military engineer, Vauban. The image captures the timeless beauty of the Lille Gate, with its intricate stonework and the tranquil waters of the moat reflecting the gate's grandeur. The gate's historical significance is further emphasized by its location in the heart of the city, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and tourists alike. The Lille Gate serves as a testament to the enduring history of Ypres, which has withstood the test of time, including the devastating impact of World War I. This image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of grandeur and historical significance.
