EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts two exquisite and intriguing mushroom species: the Little Shiitake (Lentinus tigrinus) and the Deep Root Mushroom (Xerula radicata, formerly known as Collybia radicata). The image is taken from Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons de France, Suisse et Belgique," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and masterfully rendered in chromolithography by Lassus. The Little Shiitake, also known as the Black Forest Shiitake or the Tiger Shiitake, is a delightful and highly prized edible mushroom. It is native to Asia but has been cultivated in Europe since the late 19th century. The cap of this fungus is small, typically measuring only 2-5 centimeters in diameter, and is characterized by its brown, wavy, and slightly scaly surface. The stem is slender and white, with a brownish tinge near the cap. The Little Shiitake forms symbiotic relationships with various tree species, particularly oak and beech, and is known for its rich, savory, and umami flavor. The Deep Root Mushroom, also known as the Collybia radicata, is a fascinating and elusive fungus. It is found in the wood of dead or dying hardwood trees, particularly beech, and forms a unique symbiotic relationship with the tree's roots. The cap of this fungus is small, typically measuring only 1-3 centimeters in diameter, and is initially conical, later expanding to become flat and umbilicated. The cap is tan to brown, with a wavy margin and a central depression. The stem is long and slender, often reaching up to 15 centimeters in length, and is covered in fine, white, radial fibers. The Deep Root Mushroom is not edible, but it is of great scientific interest due to its unique ecological role and intricate morphology.
