EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, dating back to 1885, showcases an impressive collection of locomotives from the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), Wrexham Mold & Connors Quay division. The illustration includes various engines from the Mersey Tunnel, Taff Vale, Rhymney, and Festiniog Railways, each meticulously detailed with key measurements for railway enthusiasts. The LNWR locomotive at the forefront is the "Theodore," an impressive engine with outside cylinders and a 0-4-2T wheel arrangement. Measuring 16 feet 2 inches in length and 6 feet 6 inches in height, this engine was built in 1859 and showcased the early evolution of Darlington-type locomotives. Another engine depicted is the "West," a 0-4-0T engine from the Taff Vale Railway, which measures 15 feet 6 inches in length and 6 feet 6 inches in height. This engine, built in 1863, was a popular design for shunting and branch line services. Adding to the visual interest of this print are the scenes of Telford's and Stephenson's bridges at the Menai Straits. The Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford, and the Britannia Bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson, are iconic structures that have stood the test of time and remain significant landmarks in Welsh history. The inclusion of the Mersey Tunnel engine, Rhymney Railway engine, and Festiniog Railway engine adds to the diverse range of locomotives featured in this print. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of railway engineering during the late 19th century, providing a fascinating insight for railway enthusiasts and historians alike.
