EDITORS COMMENTS
Long Pepper, or Piper longum, is a flowering plant in the Piperaceae family, native to South Asia and Indonesia. This handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, depicts the plant in all its intricate beauty. The image is taken from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants," published in London in 1880. Long pepper, also known as pippali or pippali pepper, is a spice that has been used in traditional Indian and Indonesian medicine for centuries. The plant grows up to 3 meters tall and produces small, red-brown berries that are dried and used as a spice. The berries are similar in size and shape to those of common black pepper, but they are longer and thinner, with a slightly different flavor profile. Long pepper has a pungent, slightly sweet and fruity taste, with a hint of pine and citrus notes. It is often used in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, particularly in dishes that call for a more complex and nuanced pepper flavor. In traditional medicine, long pepper has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory problems, digestive issues, and joint pain. The botanical illustration captures the plant's delicate details, from the intricate patterns on its leaves to the tiny flowers and berries. The handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, bringing out the vibrant colors and textures of the plant. Overall, this lithograph is a stunning example of the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized botanical illustration in the late 19th century.
