EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the youthful exuberance of Miss Margaret Whigham and Miss Jeanne Stourton as they gracefully perform in the tableaux dance at Madame Vacanis charity matinee in 1929. Dressed as lawn tennis girls of the 1880s, they are among a group of pupils from Madame Vacanis dancing school, entertaining the audience at the Pavilion Theatre. At sixteen years old, Margaret was already turning heads and would go on to become the Debutante of the Year when she came out. Her life was filled with many transformations; she later married Charles Sweeny and became Mrs. Sweeny, and then, on her second marriage, she became the Duchess of Argyll. Jeanne, her friend and close confidante, shared a striking resemblance to Margaret, a fact often noted by the press. This image offers a glimpse into their past, before their lives took unexpected turns that would make headlines in the years to come.
