In this striking chromolithograph, we find the Marquis of Brandenbourg, Marquis de Brandenberg, proudly displayed on horseback against a richly textured, golden background. The Marquis wears the elegant attire of the 15th century, adorned with the distinctive insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and ancient chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Marquis holds the standard of his house, a banner featuring the arms of Brandenbourg and the Order of the Golden Fleece. The arms of Brandenbourg consist of a black eagle with a golden crown and a red letter "B" on its chest, while the arms of the Order of the Golden Fleece display a golden fleece on a blue background. The Marquis' horse is also bedecked with the Order's insignia, further emphasizing his membership in this esteemed organization. This image is taken from Loredan Larchey's "Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle" (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The illustration is derived from an earlier, illustrated manuscript, numbered 4790, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal.
