EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the New Zealand fur seal, Arctocephalus forsteri, also known as the "sea bear of the Southern Ocean" according to Forster. The image was created by W.H. Lizars, based on an illustration by James Stewart, and was published as part of Robert Hamilton's "Amphibious Carnivora" in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Mammalia, in Edinburgh in 1839. The New Zealand fur seal is a native of the sub-Antarctic and South Pacific Ocean, with a distribution ranging from the sub-Antarctic islands to New Zealand. This species is characterized by its long, pointed snout, short, dense fur, and distinctive ear flaps. They are excellent swimmers, capable of diving up to 500 meters deep and staying underwater for up to 30 minutes. The New Zealand fur seal was once hunted for its fur, which was highly prized for making coats and other clothing items. However, overexploitation of their populations led to a significant decline in numbers, and they are now protected under various international and national laws. Today, their populations are recovering, and they can be found in various colonies around the New Zealand coastline and sub-Antarctic islands. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of the New Zealand fur seal but also highlights the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to enjoy. The meticulous handcolouring adds depth and texture to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history prints.
