EDITORS COMMENTS
Nubian Ibex and Abyssinian Ibex: Rare and Vulnerable Horned Goats of Africa This exquisite handcoloured engraving, created by Charles Hamilton Smith and published in Edward Griffith's The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier in 1827, showcases the striking features of two rare and vulnerable species of ibex native to Africa: the Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) and the Abyssinian ibex (Capra jaela), also known as the Jaal ibex. The Nubian ibex, depicted on the left side of the image, is a medium-sized goat with distinctive black markings on its face and limbs. They are found in the mountainous regions of Sudan and Ethiopia, and their population is estimated to be around 10,000 individuals. Due to habitat loss, poaching, and competition with livestock, the Nubian ibex is currently listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. On the right side of the engraving, the Abyssinian ibex, or Jaal ibex, is shown with a lighter coat and distinct white markings on its face. These ibex inhabit the highlands of Ethiopia, and their population is estimated to be around 1,000 individuals. The Abyssinian ibex is also threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and competition with livestock, and is currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these rare and vulnerable species of ibex and preserve the biodiversity of Africa's natural habitats.
