EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two stunning species of Old World swallowtails: the Old World swallowtail, Papilio machaon (1), and the scarce swallowtail, Iphiclides podalirius (2). The intricately detailed illustrations depict not only the adult butterflies (Papillons), but also their larvae (caterpillars) and pupae (chrysalises). The Old World swallowtail, also known as the European swallowtail, is a large and elegant butterfly, characterized by its long, pointed wings adorned with black, white, and yellow markings. The larvae of this species are strikingly patterned, with a bright yellow body and black head, while the pupa is encased in a sturdy, brown chrysalis. The scarce swallowtail, on the other hand, is a smaller and more elusive butterfly, with a wingspan of around 6.5 centimeters. Its wings are a beautiful blend of orange, black, and white, with a distinctive black band running across the forewings. The larvae of this species are mostly green with a yellow stripe, while the pupa is covered in a brown, textured chrysalis. Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle was a groundbreaking work that aimed to document the natural world through stunning illustrations. This particular engraving is a testament to the artist's skill and dedication to capturing the beauty and intricacy of these two Old World swallowtail species. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and vibrancy to the already stunning illustrations, making this a truly breathtaking work of art and a valuable addition to any natural history collection.
