Patient of Barts hospital lifted on a stretcher into a specially fitted Green Line hospital coach. As part of the preparations for war, many buses were posted outside hospitals and converted into ambulances to evacuate patients in the case of air raids, with seats replaced by racks to carry stretchers. In response to the imminent threat of air raids, many buses were commandeered by the British military and converted into makeshift ambulances. Known as "Green Line Hospital Coaches," these vehicles were fitted with specialized racks to carry multiple stretchers, allowing for the efficient evacuation of large numbers of patients from hospitals in the event of an attack. The seats were removed to make room for the stretcher racks, transforming the buses into mobile medical units.
