EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a patient is being carefully lifted onto a stretcher and prepared for evacuation from Barts Hospital in London during the early days of World War II. The year is 1939, and the ominous clouds of war are gathering on the horizon. In response to the imminent threat of air raids, many buses were commandeered by the British military and converted into makeshift ambulances. Known as "Green Line Hospital Coaches," these vehicles were fitted with specialized racks to carry multiple stretchers, allowing for the efficient evacuation of large numbers of patients from hospitals in the event of an attack. The seats were removed to make room for the stretcher racks, transforming the buses into mobile medical units. The patient in this photograph is being carefully lifted into one such coach, his expression one of apprehension and uncertainty as he is transported to safety. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the preparations and sacrifices made during wartime to ensure the safety and wellbeing of civilians, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.
