EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the Mitre PH, located in Tottenham (New), London, during the 1930s. The Mitre, a public house or "boozer" as it was commonly known, was a beloved local establishment that was first rebuilt in 1938. At the time of this image, the pub was under the management of the Charrington and Company Limited, which was a prominent brewery in London during the era. The historical significance of this photograph extends beyond its charming depiction of a bygone era. The back of the print reveals intriguing details about the Mitre's trading record. It shows that the pub was operational from 1934 and remained so until at least 1961, with the address listed as Mitre, Tottenham (New), London N15 6DL. Unfortunately, the Mitre PH did not continue to thrive indefinitely. By May 2017, the pub had fallen into disrepair and was lying derelict and boarded up. The date of the photograph is given as 1939, but it is unclear whether this was the exact year the pub closed or if it was simply an error in the metadata. Despite its tragic end, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and character of London's public houses during the 1930s. The Mitre PH, with its distinctive facade and rich past, continues to captivate the imagination and inspire nostalgia for a time long past.
