1. Title: Pink-necked Green Pigeon (Treron vernans vernans) - A Colonial-era Illustration This image showcases the Pink-necked Green Pigeon (Treron vernans vernans), also known as the Purple Pigeon or Jooan of Java (Columba purpurea). The illustration dates back to the late 18th century, created through a collaboration between Governor Joan Gideon Loten, Pieter de Bevere, and Peter Brown. Governor Loten, a Dutch colonial administrator in Java, Indonesia, commissioned the illustration to document the diverse avian species native to the region. Pieter de Bevere, a renowned Flemish artist, provided the initial sketch based on his observations. The final product was then brought to life through the meticulous hand-coloring and copperplate engraving techniques by Peter Brown for his "New Illustrations of Zoology." The Pink-necked Green Pigeon is a striking bird, with its predominantly green plumage contrasting beautifully with the pinkish hue on its neck and underparts. The species is native to Indonesia and the easternmost part of the Malay Peninsula. Historically, it was also found in Java, but its population has declined significantly due to habitat loss and hunting, making it an endangered species today. The intricate details in this illustration provide a glimpse into the natural history of the Pink-necked Green Pigeon and serve as a reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists in Indonesia and beyond. This artwork not only showcases the beauty of this bird but also highlights the importance of documenting and preserving the world's natural heritage.
