EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Limnadia d'Hermann, Brachipodi. Lofiropi. Branchiopodi," depicts two distinct species of planktonic crustaceans: Limnadia hermani and Branchinecta paludosa. The illustration, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, was published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Science," in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The first crustacean, Limnadia hermani, is shown at the top left of the image. It is identified by its bulbous eyes, which resemble those of a fish, and its elongated, striped body. The second crustacean, Branchinecta paludosa, is depicted at the bottom right. It is characterized by its fairy-like appearance, with a transparent body and delicate, branching appendages. Turpin, the director of the illustration, was a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the copperplate stipple engraving technique are evident in this illustration. The intricate patterns and textures of the crustaceans' bodies are beautifully rendered, making this a valuable addition to any collection of historical scientific illustrations. The image also includes various fish species, such as a red mullet (Mullus surmuletus), a rouget (Triglia), and a pomatome telescope fish (Telescopus telescopus), which were likely included for scale or as part of the ecosystem in which these crustaceans were found. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the past and the scientific discoveries being made during the 19th century.
