EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving, created by August Dumenil for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an exquisite collection of Polyommatus butterflies. The image features five distinct species: the Black Hairstreak Butterfly (Satyrium pruni), Common Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus icarus), Purple-edged Copper (Lycaena hippothoe), Common Guava Blue (Virachola isocrates), and an unidentified species labeled as Polyommates du prunier, Calliopsis, Hippothee, Isocrate. The Black Hairstreak Butterfly, also known as the Prunus Hairstreak, is a small, slender butterfly with black wings adorned with white spots and a distinctive white stripe down the center. The Common Blue Butterfly, or the Small Blue, is a widespread European species with bright blue wings and a silver-white underside. The Purple-edged Copper is a small, orange-brown butterfly with distinctive purple edges on its wings. The Common Guava Blue, also known as the Guava Duskywing, is a small, dark blue butterfly with a white spot on each wing. The last species, labeled as Polyommates du prunier, is not easily identifiable without further information. This intricately detailed engraving showcases the beauty and diversity of the Polyommatus butterfly genus, which is characterized by their bright colors and distinctive wing patterns. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art and an essential addition to any natural history collection.
