Pompeys Pillar and Cleopatra's Needle: A Transcontinental Connection in Ancient History This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, from Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" (Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli), published in Florence in 1843, offers a unique glimpse into the ancient world. The image features two iconic monuments from different continents: Pompeys Pillar in Egypt and Cleopatra's Needle in Alexandria. Pompeys Pillar, depicted on the left, is a red sandstone column located in Egypt, near Aswan. It is the last remaining ancient Roman monument in Egypt, commemorating the victory of Emperor Diocletian over the Blemmyes and the Nobatae in AD 296. The column stands tall and proud, its intricate carvings still visible, showcasing the grandeur and power of the Roman Empire. On the right, Cleopatra's Needle, an obelisk, graces the port of Alexandria. Originally erected in Heliopolis, Egypt, around 1450 BC, the obelisk was later moved to Alexandria by Cleopatra VII in 80 BC as a gift to Mark Antony. The obelisk, adorned with hieroglyphics and inscriptions, stands as a testament to the rich cultural exchange between Egypt and the Mediterranean world. The juxtaposition of these two monuments in this engraving highlights the interconnectedness of ancient civilizations, transcending geographical boundaries and showcasing the shared history of Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean. The intricate details of the engraving, from the intricate carvings on Pompeys Pillar to the intricate patterns on the clothing of the people depicted, offer a glimpse into the customs, manners, and anthropology of the ancient world.
