EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Publius or Lucius Septimius Geta Augustus, also known as Roman Emperor Geta (189-211 AD). The image is a copperplate engraving extracted from "The Roman Monarchy" by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697. The engraving was created by Abraham Bogaert. Geta was the younger brother of Caracalla and Marcus Opellius Macrinus, who both preceded him as Roman emperors. After the assassination of Macrinus in 217 AD, Geta was proclaimed emperor by the Praetorian Guard. However, his reign was short-lived as his older brother Caracalla, who had been in exile during Geta's rule, returned to Rome and had Geta assassinated. Geta's portrait showcases the classical Roman features that were popular during the 17th century. He is depicted wearing the imperial diadem and a toga, symbolizing his status as an emperor. The intricate details of the engraving reveal the skill and artistry of Abraham Bogaert. The portrait provides a glimpse into the imperial court of ancient Rome and the political intrigue that surrounded the Caesars and Kaisers of that era. The copperplate engraving was a popular method of printmaking during the 17th century, and this image of Emperor Geta would have been widely circulated and appreciated by collectors and scholars of ancient history. The portrait serves as a valuable historical record and a testament to the enduring fascination with the Roman Empire and its leaders.
