This striking portrait depicts Flavius Gratianus Augustus, better known as Emperor Gratian, ruler of the Western Roman Empire from 375 to 383 AD. Gratian was the eldest son of Valentinian I and succeeded his father upon his death. He is shown here in the traditional Roman attire of a toga, adorned with the imperial purple and ermine trim. The inscription at the bottom of the print identifies Gratian as "Gratianus Augustus," signifying his status as an Augustus, or emperor. The portrait is a copperplate engraving, created in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for his work "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy." Bogaerts was a renowned engraver and his work was highly regarded for its accuracy and detail. This particular engraving is a faithful representation of the known portraits of Gratian, which were primarily sculpted in marble and bronze. Gratian's reign was marked by a period of relative peace and stability, following the turbulent reigns of his father and his younger brother, Valentinian II. He was known for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to strengthen the military. However, his reign was cut short when he was assassinated at the age of 25, leaving the empire in the hands of his cousin, Theodosius I. This portrait is a valuable historical document, providing a glimpse into the appearance and regal bearing of a Roman emperor from the late antique period. It is also a testament to the skill and artistry of Abraham Bogaerts and the enduring legacy of Roman imperial iconography.
