EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Quintillus, also known as Marcus Aurelius Claudius Quintillus Augustus, who ruled from 270 AD. The copperplate engraving is an exquisite example from Abraham Bogaerts' De Roomsche Monarchy, published in Utrecht in 1697 by Francois Salm. Quintillus is shown in regal attire, wearing a laurel wreath and a toga, symbolizing his imperial power. He stands before a grand temple, most likely the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, the Capitoline Temple in Rome. The emperor is shown performing a sacred ritual, offering hand in hand before the altar. A bull, a symbol of Jupiter, is being led to the altar for sacrifice. The smoke from the burning offerings rises into the sky, signifying the connection between the emperor, the gods, and the Roman people. The priests, dressed in traditional Roman robes, stand by, ready to assist in the ceremony. The scene is filled with a sense of reverence and solemnity, as the emperor pays homage to the gods in the hopes of securing their favor and protection for his rule. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of the emperor's toga to the intricate designs on the temple walls, transport us back to ancient Rome and offer a glimpse into the religious practices and rituals of the time. This beautiful and historically significant image is a testament to the enduring power and influence of Roman culture and the importance of religion in the lives of its leaders. The 17th-century copperplate engraving, created by the skilled hand of Abraham Bogaerts, remains a valuable and captivating work of art and historical record.
