EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving captures the exquisite detail and beauty of two closely related yet distinct species of butterflies, the Purple Emperor (Apatura iris) and the Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia). The image, created by the Pauquet brothers after an original illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel, was published as part of Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe" or "Natural History of European Butterflies" in 1864. The Purple Emperor, depicted here both dorsally and ventrally, is a large and striking butterfly with iridescent purple wings that can be found in woodlands and heathlands across Europe. The Lesser Purple Emperor, shown next to its larger counterpart, is a smaller and less common species with similar wing markings but a more slender body and wings that are slightly darker in color. The intricate engraving process used to create this print allowed for the intricate details of the butterflies' wings and bodies to be captured with remarkable accuracy, showcasing their delicate patterns and vibrant colors. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of depth and realism, bringing the butterflies to life on the page. As part of Hippolyte Lucas's comprehensive work on European butterflies, this print is an important contribution to the scientific record of these fascinating insects and a testament to the skill and artistry of the Pauquet brothers and Alexis Nicolas Noel.
