EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Raine McCorquodale, the beloved daughter of renowned novelist Barbara Cartland, captivates the audience at the Vacani matinee held at the London Hippodrome in June 1937. At the tender age of eight, Raine donned a vibrant feathered costume and graced the stage as a canary, bringing joy and delight to the children in attendance. The matinee, organized by the pupils of Madame Vacani's dancing school, aimed to raise funds for the children's ward of the South London Women's Hospital. The young Raine, with her sparkling eyes and radiant smile, embodied the essence of innocence and charm. This heartwarming moment marked the beginning of her performing career, which would later lead her to marry Gerald Legge in 1952 and become Mrs. Gerald Legge. In her second marriage, she became the stepmother of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1976. This photograph, taken during her childhood, offers a precious glimpse into Raine's past and her early connection to the world of entertainment. Dressed in her colorful canary costume, she stands as a testament to her playful spirit and the charitable endeavors that brought people together during a time of hope and resilience. The Vacani matinee at the London Hippodrome in 1937 remains an enduring memory, not only for the young Raine McCorquodale but for all those who witnessed her captivating performance. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the power of art, charity, and the magic of childhood memories.
