EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing Regency-era print, a distinguished gentleman physician, Dr. Cassock F.R.S., rides a horse with an unusual accessory - a protective wooden chin piece. The image, titled "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," was created by the renowned English satirist and illustrator, Henry Bunbury, and published in 1809. The print was later hand-coloured and engraved by Thomas Rowlandson. The scene depicts Dr. Cassock, wearing a top hat with a low brim, riding through a storm at a crossroads. A bewildered family of farm labourers watches him pass by, likely questioning the doctor's unconventional riding attire and the necessity of the chin piece. The physician's horse, its coat slick with rain, appears calm and obedient, as Dr. Cassock holds the reins firmly in one hand and brandishes a riding crop in the other. The print's humorous tone is further emphasized by the caricatured elements, such as the doctor's oversized monocle and the exaggerated expressions of the labourers. The title of the print, "An Academy for Grown Horsemen," suggests that the image is meant to poke fun at the idea of a learned man attempting to master the art of horse riding late in life. The print also features other modes of transportation, such as a carriage, a gig, and a phaeton, all being affected by the wind and rain. The doctor's loss of control over his horse could be a commentary on the unpredictability of the elements and the challenges of riding in adverse weather conditions. Overall, this print offers a delightful glimpse into the Regency era's society and culture, with its blend of humour, satire, and visual detail.
