EDITORS COMMENTS
Schrenck's Tulip, Tulipa suaveolens, also known as Tulipa schrenkii, is a rare and enchanting bulbous perennial plant that once graced Victorian gardens and greenhouses. This beautiful chromolithograph print is an illustration of the Schrenck's Tulip, taken from Edward Step's "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse," published by Frederick Warne in London in 1896. The illustration was created by Desire Bois, a skilled botanical artist of the time. The Schrenck's Tulip, named after the Austrian botanist Johann Georg Schrenk, is native to Central Asia and is characterized by its unique, cup-shaped, bright red flowers with yellow edges and a distinctive green stripe down the middle. The plant grows to a height of around 15 cm (6 inches) and thrives in cooler climates. In the illustration, the Schrenck's Tulip is depicted in a watery setting, surrounded by other aquatic plants such as the water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes. The use of water in the background adds to the ethereal quality of the image, making the Schrenck's Tulip appear even more delicate and exotic. The Victorian era was a time of great interest in horticulture and botany, and the collection and cultivation of rare and exotic plants was a popular pastime among the wealthy. The Schrenck's Tulip, with its striking appearance and rarity, would have been a prized addition to any Victorian garden or greenhouse. Today, it remains a beloved and intriguing plant among gardening enthusiasts and botanical collectors. This chromolithograph print is a beautiful and intricate record of a bygone era, providing a glimpse into the world of Victorian gardening and horticulture, and a reminder of the enduring allure of the Schrenck's Tulip.
