EDITORS COMMENTS
Sergeant-at-Arms: A Symbol of Power and Authority in the 15th Century This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts a Sergeant-at-Arms, an essential figure in the medieval court, wielding a ceremonial mace. The image is taken from a manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, part of the portfolio VI 149 from Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France. The Sergeant-at-Arms, dressed in a richly decorated cassock or casaque, wears a chaperon or hood adorned with a large angel and a long, flowing veil. His sleeves, or manches, are voluminous and feature intricate designs. The Sergeant-at-Arms holds the mace, or masse, in his left hand, while his right hand rests on the hilt of his sword. The mace, a symbol of power and authority, is topped with a large, ornate ball and a cross, emphasizing the religious and secular importance of the role. The Sergeant-at-Arms was responsible for maintaining order in the court, carrying out the commands of the monarch, and escorting important dignitaries. The ceremonial mace served as a reminder of the Sergeant-at-Arms' power and authority, as well as a symbol of the monarch's power and justice. The elaborate costume, featuring rich fabrics, intricate designs, and distinctive headgear, further emphasized the importance and prestige of the role. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the medieval court, providing a fascinating insight into the history and symbolism of the Sergeant-at-Arms and their ceremonial mace.
