EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the stunning beauty of the Siberian Larkspur, Delphinium grandiflorum and Delphinium chinense. The intricate details of the delicate flowers are masterfully captured in this illustration, created by George Cooke based on the original observation by George Loddiges for Conrad Loddiges Botanical Cabinet in Hackney, London, in 1817. Delphinium grandiflorum, also known as the Siberian Larkspur or Russian Larkspur, is a herbaceous perennial native to Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The plant produces tall spikes of vibrant blue, purple, or white flowers with distinctive spurs, resembling the snouts of dolphins, hence the common name 'larkspur'. These flowers bloom in late spring and summer, adding a splash of color to gardens and meadows. Delphinium chinense, on the other hand, is native to China and is commonly known as the Chinese Larkspur or the Chinese Bellflower. It is a clump-forming perennial that produces spikes of bell-shaped, two-lipped flowers in various shades of blue, purple, and pink. The flowers appear in late spring and continue into summer. This enchanting illustration not only showcases the allure of these captivating flowers but also serves as a testament to the skillful artistry of the botanical illustrators of the past. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors bring the Siberian Larkspur and Chinese Larkspur to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty in a unique and timeless way.
