EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate print depicts the South Island Piopio, or Turnagra capensis, a tragically extinct bird species native to New Zealand. The South Island Piopio, also known as the Thick-billed Thrush or Turdus crassirostris, was a distinctive bird with a thick, down-curved beak and a rich, chestnut-brown plumage. The image was meticulously drawn and engraved by the renowned English ornithologist, John Latham, for his seminal work, "A General History of Birds." Published in Winchester in 1822, Latham's magnum opus was one of the most comprehensive ornithological works of its time. The South Island Piopio was once abundant on the forested South Island of New Zealand, but its population dwindled due to habitat loss and the introduction of predators such as rats and cats. The last confirmed sighting of this bird was in 1907, making it an unfortunate casualty of human activity and environmental change. This beautiful print serves as a poignant reminder of the South Island Piopio's existence and the importance of preserving the natural world. Latham's meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to documenting the natural history of his time make this print a valuable and intriguing piece of ornithological history.
