EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by August Dumenil for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an intriguing encounter between three fascinating creatures of the natural world: the Spurge Hawk-moth (Hyles euphorbiae), the Hornet Moth (Sesia apiformis), and the Toothache Plant (Spilanthes species). The Spurge Hawk-moth, depicted in the foreground, is a large and striking moth with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. Its distinctive markings, with a prominent "V" shape on its thorax and a white band on its abdomen, make it easily recognizable. The moth is shown in the process of feeding on the nectar of the Toothache Plant, which is identified by its characteristic yellow flowers with small, dark centers. In the background, the Hornet Moth (Sesia apiformis) can be seen perched on a twig. This moth, with its resemblance to a wasp, is a master of disguise, using its false eyespots and wasp-like appearance to deter predators. The caterpillar of the Hornet Moth, not shown in the image, feeds on various plants, including the Toothache Plant. The Toothache Plant, also known as the Spilanthes or the Dent de Lion, is a small herbaceous plant native to South America. It is known for its unusual property of producing flowers that harden and turn white when they are ripe, giving the appearance of tiny white pearls. The plant was believed to have medicinal properties, particularly in relieving toothache, hence its common name. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of these three creatures but also highlights the fascinating relationships between them in the natural world.
