EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three magnificent species of rays: the Thornback Ray (Raja clavata, 1), the Lusitanian Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera marginata, 2), and the Giant Devil Ray (Mobula mobular, 3). The intricate details of their unique features are beautifully captured in this exquisite work of art. The Thornback Ray, also known as the Common Spotted Ray or the Blue Spotted Ray, is a widespread species found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas. It is characterized by its distinctive thorny skin and blue spots. The Lusitanian Cownose Ray, also known as the European Cownose Ray, is native to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is easily recognizable by its distinctive cownose shape and the white spots on its underside. The Giant Devil Ray, also known as the Atlantic Devil Ray, is the largest of all the devil rays and is found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is a powerful and agile predator, with a wingspan that can reach up to 5 meters. The three rays depicted in this engraving, along with the Raja bouclee, Raja mourine, and Raja cephaloptera (not shown), are all members of the family Rajidae, commonly known as the stingrays. Several species of rays, including these three, are currently endangered due to overfishing and habitat destruction. It is essential that we continue to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats to ensure their survival for future generations.
