EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's esteemed "Book of the World," published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases an enchanting array of blue butterflies. The image features a total of seven distinct species, each exhibiting their unique characteristics and vibrant hues. In the foreground, the Adonis Blue butterfly (Polyommatus bellargus) is depicted with its brilliant blue wings and black markings. Two specimens of the Polyommatus bellargus are presented, one male with its bright blue wings and black markings, and a female, whose wings display a more subdued appearance with a smattering of blue and orange spots. The Brown Argus (Polyommatus argus) is shown in the middle of the image, with its brown wings adorned with blue spots and a distinctive orange band. Further along, the Azure Blue (Polyommatus argiolus) is illustrated with its striking blue wings and black borders. The Male and Female of the Bedford Blue (Polyommatus alsus) are displayed side by side. The male's wings are a deep, rich blue, while the female's exhibit a more muted, greyish-blue colouration. The Mazarine Blue (Cyaniris semiargus), also known as the Acis Blue, is depicted towards the right of the image, with its deep blue wings and distinctive white spots. This exquisite work of art not only serves as a testament to the beauty and diversity of these enchanting creatures but also highlights the remarkable skill and artistry of the lithographers of the time. The intricate details and vivid colours bring each butterfly to life, making this a truly breathtaking piece of natural history.
