EDITORS COMMENTS
Wintergreen, or Gaultheria procumbens, is a small evergreen shrub native to North America, particularly in the eastern United States and Canada. This handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, showcases the beauty and intricacy of this medicinal plant. The illustration is taken from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants," published in London in 1880. Wintergreen is also known as tea berry or jersea, and its leaves are characterized by their shiny, dark green surface and distinctive red color when crushed. The plant produces small, white flowers in the late spring, followed by red berries that ripen in the fall. The plant has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for its analgesic and antiseptic properties. The leaves and berries were used by indigenous peoples to treat a variety of ailments, including headaches, toothaches, and respiratory issues. European settlers also adopted the use of wintergreen for medicinal purposes, and it was included in various herbal remedies and apothecary preparations. The plant's aromatic leaves and berries also give it culinary uses. They can be used to flavor teas, jams, jellies, and other dishes. The distinctive wintergreen flavor is also used in commercial food and beverage products, such as gum and candy. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration not only captures the medicinal and culinary importance of wintergreen, but also highlights the artistry and skill of the botanical illustrators and lithographers of the late 19th century.
