This engraving depicts the Majorcan writer and philosopher, Ramon Llull (1233/1235-1315/1316), surrounded by the allegory of his most famous work, the Arbor Scientiae, or Tree of Science. Llull, also known as Raimundus Lullus or Raimundus Lulianus, was a Catalan cleric, philosopher, and theologian, born on the Balearic Islands. He is best known for his extensive literary and philosophical works, which aimed to promote the study of the Catholic faith and the use of the Catalan language in scholarly circles. The Arbor Scientiae, represented in this image, is an allegorical representation of the structure of knowledge, with the root symbolizing the divine principle, the trunk representing logic and reason, and the branches and fruits representing the various sciences. Llull believed that the Tree of Science could be used as a tool for converting non-Christians to the faith. Llull wore the habit of a Dominican friar and spent much of his life traveling throughout Europe, promoting his ideas and engaging in debates with scholars and theologians. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1826 and is now considered a blessed figure in Catalonia and the Spanish-speaking world. This engraving, published in Leiden in 1635, is a testament to the enduring influence of Llull's ideas and his role as a major figure in European intellectual history.
