Royal Air Force - Douglas DB-7A Havoc II intruder aircraft lined up at the factory before delivery. The nearest aircraft is AH433, the fourth production aircraft. 200 DB-7As with more powerful engines, were ordered by France, but the entire order was taken over by the British purchasing committee. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a lineup of eight Douglas DB-7A Havoc II aircraft, eagerly awaiting delivery to the Royal Air Force in 1940. The nearest aircraft in the row is AH433, the fourth production model of this powerful intruder aircraft. Originally ordered by France with more powerful engines, the entire order was eventually taken over by the British purchasing committee. After undergoing conversion to British standards and equipment, all but four of these impressive aircraft were successfully delivered to the UK. Unfortunately, tragedy struck during a test-flight when the first plane was destroyed in a crash. Despite this setback, three others were transferred to the USAAC as A-20As before reaching their final destination. The sleek design and advanced technology of these Douglas DB-7A Havoc II planes showcase a significant advancement in aviation during this era. This image serves as a reminder of both the innovation and sacrifice that characterized military aviation efforts during World War II. The attention to detail captured in this photograph from The Peter Butt Aviation Collection truly brings history to life, offering viewers a glimpse into an important chapter of aerial warfare development.
