EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the heart of the 1850s, showcases a selection of innovative agricultural machinery produced by Advert, B Samuelson & Co. at their Britannia Iron Works in Banbury. The image, published in the July 1856 issue of The Gardeners' Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette, highlights three essential pieces of equipment that would have significantly impacted Victorian farming: turnip cutters, chaff cutters, and corn bruising mills. In the foreground, a sturdy turnip cutter is depicted, its large, sharp blades poised to efficiently slice through the bulbous roots. Farmers would have used this machine to prepare their turnips for storage or livestock feed, making the process more efficient and less labor-intensive. To the right, a chaff cutter is shown, its handles turned by a determined farmer. This machine was vital for separating the edible grain from the inedible husks and straw, making it easier to process and store grain for future use. In the background, a corn bruising mill dominates the scene. This machine, operated by a large handle, would have been used to crush corn kernels, releasing their natural sugars and creating a mash for brewing beer or producing cornmeal. The photograph not only captures the ingenuity of the Victorian era's agricultural machinery but also highlights the importance of these machines in the daily lives of farmers, enabling them to increase productivity and adapt to the changing agricultural landscape.
