EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the interior of the Vivi Station in the Congo during the late 19th century. The image is taken from the book "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), published in Barcelona around 1890. The Vivi Station was a significant outpost during the European colonization of Africa, particularly during the reign of King Leopold II of Belgium. The European colonists, dressed in military uniforms, are shown forming up in the station's courtyard. The men, likely part of a Belgian military contingent, are undergoing military training, preparing for the occupation and administration of the Congo. The indigenous people, who are present in the background, are shown working in huts, possibly engaged in agricultural activities or serving the European colonizers. The Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 had established the rules for European colonization in Africa, and the Congo Free State, under the personal rule of King Leopold II, was one of the most significant outcomes of this international gathering. The Congo Free State was established as a commercial and economic venture, with the primary goal of exploiting the natural resources of the region. The image captures a moment in the history of European colonialism in Africa, a period marked by the exploitation of indigenous peoples, the establishment of European political and economic control, and the beginning of the end of traditional African societies. The respectful depiction of the European soldiers in the image contrasts with the often violent and brutal realities of colonization, highlighting the complex and nuanced nature of this historical period.
