EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the moment of exorcism for Charles II, known as "the Bewitched," King of Spain from 1665-1700. The king was believed to be under the influence of an evil spell, leading to his ill health and inability to produce an heir to the throne. In this chromolithograph from Miguel Morayta's General History of Spain, we see a dramatic scene as a friar attempts to rid the monarch of his supposed possession. The Habsburg dynasty ruler appears frail and sickly, surrounded by figures engaged in a ritual meant to expel any demonic forces that may have been plaguing him. The atmosphere is tense and eerie, with shadows looming in the background and an air of desperation palpable in the room. Despite efforts like these exorcisms, Charles II's health continued to deteriorate until his death in 1700 without leaving a direct heir. His reign marked a troubled period for Spain, plagued by political instability and internal strife. This print serves as a reminder of the superstitions and beliefs that shaped royal history during this tumultuous era. It offers us a glimpse into a world where even kings were not immune to fears of being bewitched or haunted by dark forces beyond their control.
