Comic Postcard - Oxford - A Run with the Man-pursuing Hounds
A Run with the ανθρϖπο θηρϖμενοι Hounds has sketches of the proctors and bulldogs (Oxford University constables) pursuing, catching and disciplining a recalcitrant student. The Greek ανθρϖπο θηρϖμενοι ('anthropo theromenoi') means man-pursuing. As so often with early comic cards, they are aimed at a knowing in-group, what are now termed alumni perhaps, who will recognize enough Classical Greek to get the point of the caption on the card. Incidentally, this card has a space for a brief message below the image, which suggests the illustration was originally intended for the pre-1902 undivided-back format. Date: circa 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage comic postcard from Oxford captures a humorous scene of the man-pursuing hounds, with sketches of proctors and bulldogs chasing down a rebellious student. The Greek term 'anthropo theromenoi' meaning man-pursuing adds an extra layer of wit to this playful illustration. Created around 1902, this card is clearly aimed at an in-group audience who can appreciate the classical references and clever caption.
The detailed drawing depicts the chase in full swing, with the constables hot on the heels of their target. The covert humor and sly commentary on university life make this print a charming glimpse into early 20th-century comedic sensibilities.
The inclusion of space for a brief message below the image suggests that this artwork was originally intended for pre-1902 undivided-back format postcards. With its witty depiction of authority figures in pursuit of a wayward student, this comic postcard is sure to bring a smile to anyone familiar with Oxford's academic traditions and quirks. A delightful piece of history preserved through artistry by Grenville Collins from Mary Evans Prints Online.
