This engraving depicts the historic moment when the first main colonial post was established in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1881. The post was established by Henry Morton Stanley, an American explorer, on the shores of Ngaliema Bay, near Stanley Pool. Stanley delegated the settlement to Anthony Swinburne, a British explorer, who oversaw the establishment of the post. At the time, the Congo was a vast, unexplored region of Central Africa, rich in natural resources. European powers were eager to establish colonies and claim control over the continent's riches. Stanley's establishment of this post marked the beginning of Belgian colonialism in the Congo, which would last until 1960. The image shows a group of European men, likely traders or colonizers, standing near a thatched-roof hut, which serves as the post's headquarters. A fence made of tree trunks surrounds the area, creating a clear boundary between the European settlement and the indigenous people. In the background, native Congolese people can be seen working in the fields, while trees and trunks dot the landscape.
