EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Aboukir: A Monument to Maritime History This evocative photograph captures the HMS Aboukir, a proud and formidable British Cressy class armoured cruiser, as it cuts through the water with its distinctive funnels belching smoke. Launched in 1900, the HMS Aboukir was a symbol of the might and technological prowess of the Royal Navy. With a displacement of over 7,000 tons and armed with a main battery of twelve 6-inch guns, she was a formidable force to be reckoned with. However, the tranquil scene depicted in this image belies the tragic fate that awaited the HMS Aboukir and her crew. In September 1914, during the early stages of the First World War, the ship was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Belgium. The attack came as a shock to the British navy, marking the first time a capital ship had been sunk by a submarine in wartime. The sinking of the HMS Aboukir was a turning point in naval warfare and led to a renewed focus on anti-submarine warfare. The loss of the ship and her crew of over 600 men was a heavy blow to the Royal Navy, but their sacrifice would not be in vain. The lessons learned from this tragic event would help shape the course of the war and ultimately contribute to the eventual Allied victory. This photograph, taken from The John Barrett Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a poignant reminder of the HMS Aboukir's storied history and the sacrifices made by her crew in the name of duty and country.
