EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the essence of John Maclean, a Scottish teacher and revolutionary socialist who fearlessly stood up against injustice during a tumultuous period in history. Despite facing imprisonment for his opposition to the First World War, Maclean remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to fight for what he believed was right.
Stripped of his teaching post due to his radical views, Maclean dedicated himself fully to spreading Marxist ideology through lectures and organizing efforts. His passion for social change led him to establish the Scottish Labour College, leaving a lasting impact on future generations of activists.
In 1918, Maclean found himself once again behind bars after being convicted of sedition. Refusing to back down, he went on a hunger strike that ultimately contributed to his untimely death. The image captured here showcases Maclean in a suit and waistcoat, embodying both the intellectual rigor and unwavering commitment that defined his life's work.
As we reflect on the legacy of John Maclean, let us remember his courage in standing up against oppression and fighting tirelessly for a more just society. His story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one person's voice can spark meaningful change.
