EDITORS COMMENTS
This etching captures the grandeur and historical significance of Porta della Carta, a magnificent carved marble gateway located between the Basilica di San Marco and the Doge's Palace in Venice. Dating back to the early 15th century, between 1439 and 1442, this architectural marvel was built to represent the power and prosperity of the Venetian Republic. The intricately designed feature is adorned with sculptures of virtues, including Fortress, Justice, Prudence, Hope, and Charity, symbolizing the good qualities that a government should possess. Just above the doorway, the statue of Doge Francesco Foscari and the Lion of St. Mark can be seen. The lion is a symbol of Venice and St. Mark, the city's patron saint. Many parts of this masterpiece were designed by the sculptor architects, Giovanni Bon and Bartolomeo Bon, who skillfully combined color and form to create an enduring work of art. This etching, from the November 1916 volume of William Alison Martin's "March of the Women" collection, showcases the intricate details and beauty of Porta della Carta. The image offers a glimpse into the rich history and artistic heritage of Venice, a city renowned for its cultural and architectural treasures.
