EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite signed First Class dinner menu from the RMS Olympic dates back to September 20, 1911, an important moment in maritime history. The Olympic, Titanic's esteemed sister ship, collided with the Royal Naval cruiser HMS Hawke, resulting in significant damage to the cruiser and the need for repairs to the Olympic. The collision led to a diversion of manpower from Titanic's construction at Harland and Wolff in Belfast, causing a modest delay in the completion of the unsinkable ship. The menu, a rare relic from the past, bears the signatures of the May brothers, who were privileged First Class passengers on the Titanic, and that of Herbert Odell, on the reverse. The menu's red flag and logo of the White Star Line, a symbol of elegance and luxury during the 1910s, adorn the front. This menu is not only a testament to the opulence of ocean travel during the era but also a fascinating piece of history, offering a glimpse into the lives of the privileged passengers and the impact of unexpected events on their journeys. This menu is part of a distinguished collection, showcasing the intricacies of transportation history and the intriguing stories that lie within. The RMS Olympic, with its rich heritage and the collision with HMS Hawke, continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts alike, making this menu a valuable addition to any collection.
