EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Władysław IV Waza (1595-1648), the eldest son of Sigismund III Vasa and Anna Habsburg of Austria, who ruled as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1632 until his death in 1648. Władysław was also a titular king of Sweden. The portrait was produced by the skilled hands of Lemaitre, Vernier, and Massard during the 17th century. Born in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a significant European power at the time, Władysław's reign was marked by his efforts to strengthen the Polish-Lithuanian Union and maintain the balance of power in Europe. His reign also saw the Polish-Swedish War (1621-1629), which ended with the Peace of Altmark, securing Sweden's independence from Polish rule. Władysław is shown in this portrait wearing the royal cap and a grand feather headdress, symbolizing his monarchical status. His moustache and mustache are prominently displayed, adding to the regal appearance. The portrait reflects the European artistic trends of the time, with intricate details and a focus on the subject's character and power. During his reign, Poland and Lithuania faced various challenges, including threats from neighboring powers such as Tsarist Russia. Władysław's dynasty, the House of Vasa, played a significant role in European history, with his father, Sigismund III Vasa, being the last king of Sweden from the Vasa dynasty. This engraving is a testament to the rich history of Poland and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the early modern period, showcasing the grandeur and power of its monarchs.
