True to his word, Tell successfully shot the apple off his son's head, and in retaliation, Gessler ordered Tell to be assassinated. Tell, however, managed to escape and became a symbol of resistance against foreign rule. The statue in Altdorf commemorates this legendary tale and the bravery of William Tell.
