EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken in the picturesque town of Altdorf, Switzerland in the 1910s, showcases the iconic Statue of William Tell, a symbol of Swiss national pride and a testament to the country's rich history. The statue, created in 1910, depicts the legendary figure of William Tell, a skilled marksman and hero of Swiss folklore. William Tell, also known as Wilhelm Tell or Guillaume Tell, is a figure from the 14th century. According to the popular tale, Tell was an expert marksman who was ordered by the Austrian reeve Albrecht Gessler to shoot an apple placed on his son's head as a sign of loyalty to the House of Habsburg. Tell, who was opposed to the Austrian rule, refused and threatened to shoot Gessler instead. True to his word, Tell successfully shot the apple off his son's head, and in retaliation, Gessler ordered Tell to be assassinated. Tell, however, managed to escape and became a symbol of resistance against foreign rule. The statue in Altdorf commemorates this legendary tale and the bravery of William Tell. The image captures the moment of tension and anticipation as Tell takes aim with his crossbow, the apple shot poised to change the course of Swiss history. The statue stands as a reminder of the country's past, its folklore, and the spirit of resistance that continues to inspire generations. The photograph print, which is part of the extensive collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a unique glimpse into the past and the enduring legacy of William Tell in Swiss culture.
