EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Nile Perch and Sleeper Fish," is an exquisite illustration from Jussieu's "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles," published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The image showcases two distinct fish species native to the Nile River: the Nile Perch, Lates niloticus, and the Sleeper Fish, or Gudgeon, Ophiocara macrolepidota. The Nile Perch, also known as the Vundu or Tilapia, is a large, powerful predator fish that can grow up to 1.5 meters in length. Its body is elongated and laterally compressed, with a large head and powerful jaws. The fish is depicted in the image with its mouth wide open, showcasing its sharp teeth. The Sleeper Fish, on the other hand, is a small, bottom-dwelling fish that is well-camouflaged among the riverbed. It has a slender body, large eyes, and a distinctive, flat head. The fish is named for its ability to remain motionless on the riverbed, blending in with the sand and waiting for prey to come close before striking. The intricate details of the fish's scales, fins, and gills are beautifully rendered in this handcolored engraving, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history art. The image also includes a label identifying each fish species, adding to its scientific accuracy and value. This historical artwork is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the fish species found in the Nile River and the skill of the artists and engravers of the time.
