Normandy: The Advance to Troarn (July 1944) - This evocative photograph captures the determination of British soldiers, Ptes Clarke of Morley, Leeds, and Pte H Leech of Prescott Street, Liverpool, as they take up positions between Banneville La Campagne and Troarn during the Allied advance. Despite the thick mud holding up operations in the Caen sector, a powerful combined assault by British and Canadian tanks and infantry had succeeded in capturing half of Troarn on July 22, 1944. This double blow marked a significant moment in the D-Day landings and the subsequent Battle of Normandy. Part of a collection of 33 contact prints of British official photographs from the period, this image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War Two in North West Europe, particularly during the D-Day invasion and the Normandy Breakout of 1944.
