EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two intriguing insects: the Nun moth (Lymantria monacha) and the common house mosquito (Culex pipiens). The Nun moth, depicted in stages of its life cycle, is represented by a caterpillar (1) and three moths (2, 3). Known for their distinctive white stripes and black bodies, Nun moth caterpillars are notorious for their voracious appetite, feeding on a wide range of deciduous trees. Once they transform into moths, they have large, wingspans reaching up to 10 centimeters, with their wings adorned with intricate patterns. In stark contrast, the common house mosquitoes (4, 5) are shown in various stages of their development, including their head and proboscis (6). These tiny, winged insects are notorious for their ability to transmit diseases, including malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever. The female mosquitoes are ectoparasites, feeding on the blood of humans and animals to obtain the necessary proteins for their eggs. The male mosquitoes, on the other hand, feed on nectar and plant juices. This engraving, a beautiful example of historical entomological illustration, highlights the intricacies of both the Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) and Diptera (two-winged flies) orders. The meticulous attention to detail in the handcoloring and engraving techniques used in the creation of this illustration showcases the artistic and scientific achievements of the late 18th century.
